Health of 70-year-olds

Today, diseases such as heart attacks, stroke and bone fractures are some of the most common causes of ill health, morbidity and death in Europe and the rest of the world. Studies has revealed that in Umeå, Sweden, individuals suffer more often from heart attacks than people in many other places and fractures are more common in Umeå than in the rest of the world. Reasons for this phenomena are unknown, but we know that these diseases are increasing in incidence after the age of 70.

Researchers linked to different units at Umeå University and Västerbotten County Council wants to identify key risk factors for cardiovascular disease and fractures. Each year, we offer people 70 years of age in the Umeå region a medical examination, with the aim to track risk factors for the development of the most common diseases, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. We also examine the risk of falls and fractures, and how this is related to muscular strength and balance.
